Drying and Storage of Grains and Oilseeds.

Postharvest technology has been subject to intense study in recent years, primarily because so much product can be lost between field and the marketplace. All this research has included the drying and storage of cereal grains and oilseeds, and considerable emphasis has been focused on grain quality. Whilst moisture content is an important attribute in all grains, its control is usually related to grain quality. This means that drying is necessary before storage.

An earlier text carried the simpler title, Drying of Cereal Grains, but this new book deals with both cereals and oilseeds. Written as an engineering text, this book follows a similar format to its predecessor but it is much more than a revision, as a lot of it had to be rewritten.

The book's 14 chapters carry titles: Grain production, preservation and trade; Grain structure, consumption and properties; Drying-air properties; Grain equilibrium moisture content; Grain quality; Airflow for drying; Introductory analysis of fixed-bed drying systems; Theory and simulation of grain drying; In-bin drying; High capacity grain drying systems; Rice drying; Grain handling; Dryer control systems; and Grain storage management. The last few pages feature eight useful appendices.

Most of the equipment discussed is given the full mathematical treatment and the authors have provided many references to further reading.
