Drunken van man cops it.

Byline: By MARK FERGUSON

A DRUNK motorist hoped to get away after crashing his van on a remote road - until he unknowingly knocked on a Pc's door.

John Bryden was asleep in the bed and breakfast he runs with his wife, when he was woken by Darren Sutherland.

The 27-year-old told Mr Bryden, 40, that he had smashed his van and asked for a lift after pleading: "Don't tell the bobbies."

Mr Bryden told Sutherland to wait while he went upstairs to get dressed.

He returned in his police uniform, handcuffed Sutherland and put him in his police car - hidden at the side of the house in Craiglea, Inverness-shire in April.

Sutherland, of Dingwall, Ross-shire, was last week fined pounds 500 and disqualified for 18 months at Fort William Sheriff Court after admitting to driving while over the limit.
