Drunk sues pub after falling 3ft off a bar stool.

A drunken Irishman crippled for life when he toppled three feet off a bar stool is suing a publican for pounds 100,000.

William Joy, 36, has been granted legal aid to fight the astonishing legal case.

The wheelchair-bound bachelor claims landlord John Newell was negligent in allowing him to sit on the stool "while intoxicated". His lawyers insist Mr Newell was at fault for "not seating him at a safe height".

Legal experts say the case, the first of its kind, has enormous implications for all pubs.

Mr Joy admits he was plastered when he staggered into Mr Newell's Copper Room pub in Cookstown, Co Tyrone.

In court papers he says he fell, breaking a bone in his spine after nodding off to sleep on the stool.

The injury left him paralysed from the waist down forcing him to give up work as a butcher. "I can't work - I can't even walk. I want compensation," he said.

His father William, 64, said: "My son had drunk a lot. No one is disputing that. But the landlord should have made sure he sat on a chair nearer the floor."

It is understood that Mr Joy has already received up to pounds 10,000 in legal aid.
