Drugs shame of former police officer.

A disgraced former West Bromwich policeman was found to have taken drugs when tests were carried out on a sample of his hair after he had been questioned by senior officers.

And at Warwick Crown Court ex-Pc Tristan Hemsley, who had been offered a caution but refused to take it, pleaded guilty to possessing a quantity of cocaine.

Hemsley (26) of Moxley Drive, Darlaston, West Midlands, who resigned from the force after his arrest, was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay pounds 300 costs.

Prosecutor John Edwards said that traces of cocaine found in a hair sample in late April led a scientist to the conclusion that Hemsley had been 'a user of a fairly large quantity' of the drug.

The court had head that in January, for a reason which was not disclosed to him, Hemsley was invited to take part in a 'voluntary interview' with senior officers over his use of drugs.

He declined a request to provide a hair sample for testing, and after the interview he returned to West Bromwich police station.

But later that day he was instructed to remain at the police station, and his locker was then searched and his police clothing was seized.

Hemsley's uniform was examined, and traces of cocaine and ecstasy were found.

He was arrested in April and when his home was searched a bag containing seven diazepam tablets and another with traces of cocaine in it were found.

A hair sample was then taken, and a scientist found evidence of cocaine, ecstasy and diazepam, consistent with it having been taken between January and April
