Drugs are delayed 'to save cash'.

NEW cancer drugs are held back by the Government in order to save money, pharmaceutical experts have warned. GlaxoSmithKline chief executive Sir Andrew Witty said drug prices had already been cut by 5% across Europe. But he added: "The Government are also delaying the approval of innovative new drugs. To save money they think, 'Let's just not buy the next round of innovation'."

Prof Jonathan Waxman, of Imperial College London, claimed two new prostate cancer drugs had recently been blocked. He added: "It is a disaster."

But the Department of Health insisted: "The Government has increased spending on health, which includes new drugs."
