Facts and comparisons

In this resource for pharmacists and physicians, Tatro, a drug information analyst, presents one-page monographs of drugs and their interactions with other drugs and foods, with an emphasis on information that will improve therapeutic decision making. Arranged alphabetically according to the principal drug affected, each monograph contains information on drugs or drug classes that may interact; known and potentially interacting drugs and common trade names; the significance in terms of onset, severity, and documentation of the interaction; pharmacologic effects and clinical manifestations; the mechanism of the interaction; management; and discussion of published data. Information was drawn from biomedical literature focusing mostly on human subjects. Introductory material details the principles of drug interactions, drug-induced prolongation of the cardiac QT interval and torsades de pointes, and the effects of cigarette smoking on drug therapy. The index includes the significance rating for each interaction.
