Drug firm in payout rethink; NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL NEWS ROUND-UP.

US PHARMACEUTICAL giant Merck will consider settling a limited number of legal cases over its withdrawn painkiller Vioxx.

The drug's link to heart attacks and strokes spawned thousands of lawsuits and last week's pounds 140 million jury verdict in Texas.

New Jersey-based Merck has said it could still decide to fight some cases aggressively, but may decide to settle" others out of court.

Merck withdrew the arthritis treatment from the market when its own study showed Vioxx doubled the risk of heart attack or stroke when taken for at least 18 months.
