IRISH rugby star Greg O'Shea jetted off to the Love Island villa after finding out he wasn't needed for today's squad.

His sister Laura said the 24-year-old was told he would not be playing in the Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series second leg match against Poland.

Greg had been part of an Olympic qualifier in France on Sunday before touching down in Spain later that day.

Opening up about the whirlwind since he entered the show, his sister Laura explained his appearance was as big of a shock to her as it was to the viewers at home.

She told the Irish Mirror: "I didn't know, I found out on Monday when he was on his way.

"His mum got a quick heads-up which she told me about after he was gone.

"As far as I know there is a Sevens team in Poland this weekend but he knew last week he wasn't needed for that squad.

"He was playing in the Olympic qualifier in France when he was flown into the villa." After lining out for the Irish national side in the 2018 World Cup Sevens, the Limerick law graduate, who lives in Dublin, is understood to be getting on board with the Rugby Sevens team to try for next year's Olympics in Tokyo.

Greg has also made it known he remains diligent in pursuing his professional career to become a solicitor before he retires from his sporting commitments.

However, despite his last-minute dash from the field to Majorca last weekend, his sister revealed his sporting schedule is clear now until he ultimately leaves the show.

Laura said: "His next rugby commitweek ment is pre-season training when he gets out. As far as I know the next competition is the World Sevens Series in Dubai in December."

Since entering the villa, Greg has found himself in a love triangle with Amber Gill and her ex Michael Griffiths.

And he has done his family proud with how he has behaved on the hit reality series. Laura said: "We are delighted all of you are getting to see the Greg we know. Greg as a person, as a friend and as a brother is exactly what you are seeing.

"He is genuine, kind-hearted, loyal and honest. He's a true gentleman that loves a bit of a laugh and always sees the positives in life.

"He works very hard and I hope he is having the best experience because he deserves a good time after all his training and studying."

And last night it seemed Greg's gentlemanly approach paid off as Amber picked him over her firefighter ex to couple up with.

Michael had finally confessed to still having feelings for Amber this week after his partner Joanna Chimonides was dumped from the villa.

The 21-year-old beauty therapist was shocked by his revelation after his recent behaviour and blunt rebuttal.

And it came after Greg entered the show and swept Amber off her feet, picking her straightaway for a date.

Last night Amber told of her uncertainty ahead of the recoupling decision but said she went with what would make her feel the happiest.

Michael was then left to couple up with Francesca Allen who explained she "didn't really have a choice" in the matter.

And Longford girl Maura Higgins finally had a recoupling go her way as she got the chance to couple up with Dancing With The Stars professional Curtis Pritchard.

The fiery brunette first made her feelings for Curtis clear when he ended things with air hostess Amy Hart.

However, Francesca then chose to couple up with the professional dancer when she entered the villa but he continued to "get to know" Maura before deciding she was the one for him.

Love Island continues nightly at 9pm on Virgin Media Two.
