Driving Seat: Hot Colt breaks cover.
IT'S BEEN dubbed the son of Evo and Mitsubishi's new hot shot supermini will be coming to a showroom near you in February. The new Colt CZT will hit 130mph and blast from standstill to 62mph in a mere eight seconds, making it one of the fastest mini cars on the market. It's turbocharged, slingshot performance means it is capable of leaving rivals like Citroen's C2 VTS and Fiat's Punto HGT trailing in its wake.
That performance comes thanks to a specially developed version of Mitsubishi's 1. 5-litre, double overhead camshaft, 16 valve engine which is fitted with an intercooled turbocharger and tuned to develop 150bhp at 6, 000rpm and 210 Nm of torque, or pulling power, at 3, 500rpm.
This pumped-up, sporting icon of the Colt range has been developed specifically at the request of Mitsubishi's European operation to capitalise on the reputation of the awesome Evo high performance model.
The theory is that it will provide image conscious punters with the chance to drive a high performance Mitsubishi at a fraction of the cost of the Evo VIII model.
Styling work for the CZT was carried out at the Mitsubishi's design studios in Germany. It has a more dynamic, sporty look than other models in the new Colt three door range thanks to a unique front bumper design with meshed grille, side airdams, large rear spoiler, 16" alloy wheels, sports exhaust muffler, side protection mouldings and door mirror casings.
The CZT is still to receive final European type approval, but Mitsubishi is confident that it will be in its UK showrooms by mid-February and says that it will cost less than pounds 13, 000.
