Driver killed.

A woman died and her daughter was hurt when two cars crashed head-on in Northumberland last night.

The woman, aged 49, from Wakefield, was driving a Rover on the A696 road, north of Knowesgate. A police spokesman said her car crossed the single carriageway central white line and collided with a VW Golf driven by a man from Newton Hall in County Durham.

NAnd traffic was backed up for four miles today after a crash on the A1 southbound near the A690 turn-off at Durham City.
