On King Faisal Street in Sharjah, there is a right turn that connects motorists to King Abdul Aziz Road. At that same point, there's a u-turn that is placed too close to the right turn, making it very risky for motorists, especially when the car taking a u-turn is travelling at a fairly high speed.

At the u-turn, motorists need to look in all directions for traffic, before and while making the turn, as a vehicle can come around the corner in a split second. The two turns are just too close to each other. So much so, that on many instances, I have seen one vehicle entering while another is taking a u-turn at exactly the same time.

This is a spot with frequent accidents, and more waiting to happen if you are not alert and driving slowly. Motorists taking the right turn from King Faisal Street do not have a clear view of the road ahead due to the construction work at the turn; a hospital is under construction at the corner and blocks the view. Sometimes, the right lane is also blocked due to construction vehicles and motorists are surprised as they take a turn.

With the Al Nad Park a few metres ahead, you see a lot of women and children crossing the road with bicycles and strollers. When taking the u-turn, motorists must give way to all other traffic and pedestrians and not obstruct the flow of traffic approaching from the bend. Motorists shouldn't take the u-turn unless there is a clear view for a sufficient distance, of any approaching traffic.

When driving fast, motorists have a shorter span of time to respond to something in their path, and even a fraction of a second can mean the difference between life and death. Drive slower for your safety and for the safety of those around you. Keep this in mind especially around cyclists, schools and neighbourhoods with children on the streets.

People often think they're saving time by driving faster, but driving slower can reduce many other complications as well - less stress, accidents, speeding fines and less fuel usage.

Given the boom of construction, road restructuring, diversions and traffic congestion in Sharjah, it is very important to drive safe. It is important to focus on your driving. Why must we rush through life? Slow down and enjoy life more. Life is a journey - make it a pleasant one. Driving slow is such a simple step to take, but it makes an incredibly big difference.
