Drive: SAFE AND SOUND: ROAD TEST: Peugeot 807 LX; Peugeot has all the versatility of a living room on wheels.

Byline: Maxine Ashford Motoring Editor

AFTER spending a week behind the wheel of the multi-purpose Fiat Ulysse there was a real sense of deja vu when taking delivery of the Peugeot 807.

Inside and out the similarities were incredible right down to the background colours on the instrument dials.

Like the Ulysse, the Peugeot 807 guarantees a versatile package with endless variations of seating arrangements plus all the high specification features of a modern ca r.

But unlike the Ulysse, you don't get quite as much for your money. The 807 supplied for test drive was the LX 2.0 HDi which at pounds 19,795 was about pounds 100 dearer than a top-of-the -range Ulysse, but lacked sunroof, six-CD autochanger, automatic rear doors, child surveillance mirror and a number of other little finishing touches.

Despite the lower spec, the 807 was a great drive. It handled really well, both on the open road and around town. The engine was nice and quiet and the pulling power was good. But in my opinion the multi-purpose vehicle is not so much about performance as about how suitable it is for family lifestyles and in this respect the 807 comes up trumps.

Reinforcing Peugeot's excellent reputation, everything is built to a very high standard and can withstand the knocks that go with the family territory!

It is very comfortable - I covered more than 600 miles and at no time did it become a chore to drive it.

But most importantly - certainly to Peugeot - is the issue of safety and the 807 is designed to provide best-in-class levels of safety for all occupants. It is laden with features such as full-length side curtain airbags that protect passengers in all three rows of seats, plus four front airbags.

Other standard features include the latest anti-lock braking system, with electronic brake force distribution combined with emergency brake assist to provide the ultimate in passive safety.

Peugeot describes its 807 as a virtual living room on wheels with all the comforts one might expect at home.

It is airy, roomy, bright, and with 58 storage spaces discretely hidden around the vehicle, children can bring along all their favourite toys for the trip.
