Drink water to stay healthy, DM tells public.

Dubai Municipality distributes free mineral water to public and employees to drive home the point.

The Dubai Municipality (DM) is distributing mineral water bottles for free to the public and its employees as part of a campaign to raise awareness on the importance of drinking enough water to stay healthy and active, especially during the summer months.

With temperatures soaring across the region, the clinic and medical services section of the DM's public health services department launched the 'Water and Oxygen' initiative under Hussain Nasser Lootah, DM director-general.

Supported by MonViso and Oxygizer, manufacturers of oxygenated water, the drive includes distribution of boxes containing water bottles, oxygenated water and brochures on the benefits of drinking adequate amount of water, healthy breathing and avoiding stress.

The initiative was launched at the DM headquarters on Tuesday. An information booth on the impact of water and oxygen on the vital organs in the body has been set up at the headquarters as part of the drive.

The campaign is being conducted at select points, including the DM Clinic in Deira, Al Tawar Centre, Al Karama Centre, Safa Park, Al Manar Centre, Al Dhiyafa Road, Al Wasl Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Jumeirah Beach Road branches.

Municipal employees along with volunteers are touring these locations to distribute the boxes and spread the message on the health benefits of water and oxygen.

"Water is not only one of the basic elements of this universe but also the chief fuel that powers almost all life processes. If the importance of drinking water is rightly understood by everyone, it will have a significantly positive impact on public health and our living environment," said Dr Zohoor Al Sabagh, director of public health services department.

Water accounts for two-thirds of the human body and forms the main component of tissues and organs. Loss of body fluids -- dehydration -- is associated with various complications including fatigue, stress, hyperacidity, indigestion, and life-threatening conditions.

From maintaining body temperature and moisture balance to eliminating toxins and promoting weight loss, drinking water is proven to offer a range of health benefits.

Oxygen, one of the chief components of water, takes care of 90 per cent of the energy needs of the body and sustains circulation and nutrition.

"We chose the peak summer season to launch our campaign because it will alert everyone against a potential risk of (dehydration) and help them better understand the importance of drinking water and breathing healthy," said Zubaida Ghaiathi Mohammed Sharif Gayathi, head of clinic and medical services section.

Stefano Iorini, managing director of MonViso, said the campaign to remind people to drink their daily glass of water is a "simple health tip" that can "make a vast difference in our lives, especially for the growing communities in the GCC".

During a recent awareness campaign conducted by the Dubai Health Authority, a senior nutritionist said, everyone should drink 30 to 35ml of water per kilo of body weight, on an average.

For example, people weighing 60kg should drink 1.8 to 2.1litres of water per day.
