Drink drove hijack thug to jail.

A thief hi-jacked a cab, held up an off-licence - then was finally nabbed for drink driving.

Yesterday a court heard that Mark Thomson, 29, claimed his crime spree could be down to drugs he was taking for illness.

Thomson's crime trail led him from Kilwinning in Ayrshire to Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard Thomson hailed a taxi in Kilmarnock.

During the journey he feigned illness, and when the driver pulled over, Thomson said to him: "I've got a gun. I've escaped from a psychiatric ward. I want your taxi."

Thomson made off in the car and drove to Edinburgh.

There he went to a Victoria Wine shop where he told assistant Andrew Burns he had a gun. He left with several bottle s of beer.

Later Thomson was pulled over by cops in the capital and found to be almost twice the drink driving limit.

Defence agent Elaine Crawford said Thomson had been on medication for agoraphobia, depression, anxiety and alcohol dependence.

She added: "He changed medication earlier this year and since then he has been acting bizarrely."

Thomson, of Kilwinning, admitted the offences. He was jailed for four months, banned for a year and fined pounds 150.
