Drilling works of a commercial project lead to a collapse of part of Tilyani Street.
After inspecting the damaged location, City Deputy Director of Public Works, Eng. Mustafa Al Louzi, said that the drilling caused decomposing of the soil which led to the fall of water carrier tube with a diameter of 900 mm that connects west, east and center of Amman with Al Nafaq and Al Taj stations, as well as the severance of other services in that area.
He explained that a technical and architectural committee was formed by the city governor, including representatives of Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), Civil Defense, Engineering Association, Royal Scientific Society (RSS), Meyahuna Co. and the Electricity Company to study the reasons behind the breakdown, and to take all necessary measures that should ensure the safety of citizens, construction works, and the trading outlets surrounding the location.
Al Louzi said that the contractor has been charged to take all the necessary and expedient public safety procedures in the site.
Minister of Water and Irrigation, Eng. Raed Abul S'oud also inspected the location and stressed the necessity for rendering services, especially water, as soon as possible.
On his part, head of Al Madinah district, Eng. Tahseen Al 'Abbadi clarified that GAM requested the contractor to build a retaining wall adjoining Tilyani St. and supposed to be executed upon the completion of the drilling works, with a deadline of two weeks. Such a measure is meant to temporarily change the service lines to external detours, provided that an alternative temporary water tube is to be installed with a diameter of 600 mm.
Jordan Electricity Company had furnished the area with electricity through an alternative line, while cadres of the Civil Defense and those of GAM are currently working in the site to pull up water from the pit using suction equipments. 2009 Al Bawaba (www.albawaba.com)
