Dragon boat racers fired up for win.

A LIVERPOOL dragon boat team beat off competition from Dutch rowers to win a European contest.

Amathus dragon boat club was taking part in the first regatta of the European dragon boat federation ever held in the UK at Queens Dock.

The team of 22 men and women took on boats from Germany, Holland and London during the Bank Holiday weekend.

Paddler John Gait said the team were thrilled to have won.

The Fazakerley rower said: "I'm absolutely exhausted but it was a very enjoyable day and even more enjoyable to win.

"The weather wasn't great, but the support was fantastic and it was great to have this regatta in Liverpool.

"All the teams were staying over so we took the continental rowers out for a celebration in the city centre.

"This year we will be heading out to the Champion's League of dragon boat racing in St Petersburg."
