Downtime.

Just thought I'd offer a little bit of advice to the younger skater kids who are coming up and planning to make a career out of skateboarding. Twenty years ago the word "career" would have made me laugh if someone had mentioned it with the word "skateboarding." Skaters deserve to get paid for setting all the trends that all the other so-called extreme sports copy in order to progress. Take surfing, for example. Although it is dangerous, exciting, and most definitely progressing, the only thing suffers do that isn't imitating skateboarding is to ride in the tube. If it weren't for us skaters, suffers would still be running around in dayglow short shorts. Freestyle motocross is another crazy sport, but even they try to copy the skaters' moves on their bikes. Do not get me wrong, I am not dissing the moto guys, 'cause I've got nothing but respect for them and see their sport is progressing fight along with ours. Even surfing has gone on to a new level with the tow-in guys towing fight into monsters. Skateboarding has never stopped progressing and I bet we'll all be even more surprised in 10 or 20 years from now. I laugh whenever I watch America's three favorite sports on TV. Football, baseball, and basketball must be very exciting, because millions of people love to watch it, or at least they bet money on them. But for me, all of the games I see on TV remind me of the movie Groundhog Day. It looks like the same game over and over, the only different thing I can see between the pioneers of yesteryear and today's superheroes are the overpaid salaries that they all get paid. Imagine a skate contest on the same ramp over and over again day after day. Nowadays, many shoe and clothing companies are making millions of dollars. It is time for skateboarders to start getting paid for the influence we have on everyone else out there. I bet Tony Hawk is the only skater making half of what he deserves, and that's mainly because of his video game. It's hard to believe that most of the young up-and-coming suffer pros actually make a lot more money than the highest paid pro skateboarders. I think the new kids need to just think about what's really going on all around them before they sign that next five-year contract that gives them a nice car and a few dollars a piece for your skate and shoe model. Skateboarders need to realize that we are the ones that are leading the way here, and that almost all of the other sports today are now following in skateboarding's footsteps. I just thought I'd voice my opinion.
