Oats, third in the Derby and fourth in the St Leger last year, starts his third season in flying style as Pat Eddery brings him home ten lengths clear in the ten-furlong contest at Doncaster. The colt, trained by Peter Walwyn, went on to win the Jockey Club Stakes and the Ormonde Stakes, and began stallion life at the Ardenode Stud in Ireland at a fee of 1,500gns. By the time he died in 1990 he had sired a winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup (Master Oats) and the Champion Hurdle (Flakey Dove).
