Dowcett: Glasgow gold better than Giro D'Italia stage win; CYCLING.
ENGLAND'S Alex Dowsett said his time-trial gold ranked higher than his Giro D'Italia stage win of last year.
Dowsett achieved a career high on Thursday after being driven by anger to gold following his Tour de France heartache.
The 25-year-old could not watch the the 38.4-kilometres timetrial, which began and finished at Glasgow Green.
UK stages of the Tour, which began in Leeds and rolled through his home county of Essex, after a bout of bronchitis saw him omitted from Movistar's line-up.
Dowsett refocused on Glasgow 2014 and
He won in 47 minutes 41.78 seconds - an upgrade on his silver in Delhi four years ago - with Australia's Rohan Dennis second and Welshman Geraint Thomas claiming bronze.
Comparing his triumph to his 2013 Giro D'Italia stage victory, Dowsett said: "This is bigger. I think a lot of nations that aren't in the Commonwealth don't understand just how big the Commonwealths are.
"I didn't give it the credit that was deserved before Delhi, and that silver medal there just proved to me just how massive the Commies are.
"This will be a career highlight for me, regardless of what I do from here on in.
"It was a bitter disappointment not being selected for the Tour de France. I spent the whole month fairly angry - not at anyone in particular, just angry at the situation."
Thomas's bronze came just four days after he completed the Tour De France, while he will also compete in tomorrow's road race.
