Dow launches 'genuine glutaraldehyde' campaign.

Dow Microbial Control, a business group of The Dow Chemical Company, recently launched an educational campaign called "Genuine Glutaraldehyde." The campaign is designed to help customers distinguish glutaraldehyde from counterfeit products while also highlighting the benefits of the microbiocide.

Dow is one of two manufacturers of glutaraldehyde, which was introduced over 60 years ago and is one of the company's flagship molecules. It can be utilized in applications such as disinfection of medical equipment and poultry and swine facilities, and controlling microbes found in industrial operations such as oil fields and cooling towers.

According to Rick Strittmatter, global director of research and development for Dow Microbial Control, the product "provides broad efficacy, is biodegradable and formaldehyde-free, and is also non-carcinogenic, non-persistent, and non-bio-accumulative, which distinguishes it from many other biocides."

The company states that although glutaraldehyde is often confused with formaldehyde, their chemical and toxicological properties differ in significant ways. Additionally, genuine glutaraldehyde neither contains nor degrades into formaldehyde.

Mark Henning, global general manager for Dow Microbial Control, commented that "During the past few years, formulators have increasingly made and sold products that are supposedly glutaraldehyde-based, but actually contain other ingredients, including formaldehyde and glyoxal ... Customers could be overpaying by 50 to 200% based on current average market prices for these blended materials. Moreover, there are often environmental, health, and safety issues to consider with these blended products, and the personal protective equipment requirements may differ--especially for free formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen."

The company has developed educational materials to alert the public. The materials include a cost calculator to help customers determine how much they should pay for blended products, technical information and fact sheets, a compendium of glutaraldehyde milestones, and other information. In addition, the campaign has established a website at
