Double loss in season openers; Bowls.
CLEVELAND County Bowling Association opened their season with losses in both the Adams and Newton teams.
Playing against last year's championship contenders Humberside, the Adams team managed wins on three rinks out of six but lost the match 138 shots to 146.
The wins came from Bill Hall (T Gilbert, P Henry) 23-21 against D Grey, Ian Serginson (R Serginson, J Bowes) 25-20 against R Ledgerwood and the best rink of Bill Shand, (C Moore, A Nicol) 29-18 against T Neilson. This meant only six points for Cleveland and 16 points to Humberside.
The Newton match was similar, with Cleveland only winning on two rinks.
Derek Hunter (R Williams, D Mallaby) battled for a one shot win, 27-26 against M Penny, and new rink Jim Delmer (K Sturman, A Dick) were best with a fine 33-22 win against M Steer. The overall score was Cleveland 153 (4 points), Humberside 176 (18 points).
Other results were: Adams team - D Blain 18 P Cranidge 30, P Rowland 21 H Dixon 34, T O'Hara 22 M Borman 23. Newton team - S Meadows 29 T Roberts 34, G Fleming 24 D Dicker 32, P Bostock 19 P Jefferson 24, R Smith 21 P Gray 38.
The second match against Northumberland followed a similar pattern for the Adams team. Bill Shand's and Ian Serginson's teams provided the wins, 31-22 and 33-29 against S Wood and G Richardson respectively, but the final team result was Cleveland 151 Humberside 167, meaning four points to Cleveland and 18 points to Humberside.
There was success for the Newton team with strong wins on five of the six rinks.
Paul Bostock (B Lewis, L Dring) won 34-25 against T Fairfax. Steve Meadows (B Horsfield, W Newman) led throughout the game to win 23-20 against J Jordan. Phil Rowland (G Allen, P Doherty) won 26-24 against R Williams and George Fleming (B Summerhill, E Hawes) beat J Oldfield 32-26.
The only loss on the day was Jim Delmer, but he came back from 11 shots down to lose by only two shots, 31-29.
Best rink was A Hart (I Hewitson K Nudd) who powered to a 34-25 win against T Fairfax. The final Newton score was Cleveland 174 (20 points) Northumberland 145 (two points).
Other results in the Adams team were: D Hunter 21 R Humes 29, C Moore 23 I Rowes 29, J Gillespie 17 D Robson 27 and W Hall 26 R Scott 31.
Cleveland's latest match was at Ropner Park today against Nottingham.
