Dort FCU director Leroy Nesbit Jr.
A great advocate and strong voice for the working people of Flint, Mich., Nesbit lived the credit union philosophy in both his personal and professional life, the credit union said. During his tenure on the Dort Federal board of directors, he also served on numerous boards and committees, including World Council of Credit Unions, African American Credit Union Coalition, the Combined Council of Automotive Credit Unions and the Council of GM Credit Unions. Locally, Nesbit volunteered his time to enhance the Greater Flint community through his membership in Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, the Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Michigan Travel Commission, and the Disability Network.
Over his 36 years of credit union service, Nesbit was honored with several awards, including the prestigious Pete Crear Lifetime Achievement Award, Bergengren Award and the Filene and Raiffeisen certificates with the MCUL Volunteer Achievement Program. He was also named to the MCUL Hall of Fame.
On behalf of the Dort Federal Credit Union board of directors, Chairman Harry Awdish remarked, "Leroy's passion for our members and for the credit union movement remained constant. It was only on a rare occasion that Leroy would miss a board meeting, or any other credit union function. Leroy will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and by those whose lives he improved throughout his prolific work as a Dort Federal Credit Union board member."
Nesbit is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn, daughter Jacqueline and other family members and many friends.
