Donald Harrison: Free to Be (Impulse IMP3P-90134).
Donald Harrison: Free to Be (Impulse IMP3P-90134)Saxophonist Donald Harrison leads a variety of sidemen in a variety of styles in this set. From standards such as "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise" to the Meters' "Cissy Strut," Harrison seems to have absorbed all sorts of music, but this set never sounds patched together or overly eclectic. He even throws in a little vocalese on "Nouveau Swing (Reprise)" -- he's no Eddie Jefferson, but then again, Eddie was not a sax player, either. Overall, this is an excellent set of acoustic jazz that should appeal to a wide variety of jazz fans.
