Don Juan Derby got a big boost as Solaire Resort & Casino, one of Manila's top integrated resorts, agreed to back the P1.5-million classic race for imported and local three-year-olds which will be held today at the Metro Manila Turf Club in Malvar, Batangas.
"We are thrilled and thankful to have Solaire Resort & Casino back as our sponsor for the 13th Don Juan Derby," said KDJM President and former congressman Jeci Bong Lapus, who is organizing the event with former KDJM presidents Jun Almeda and Tonyboy Eleazar.
Solaire Resort & Casino is actually a returning partner of the Klub Don Juan de Manila (KDJM) for the annual staging of the championship racefest, which is offering a guaranteed prize of P900,000 for the winner in the 2,000-meter derby, P305,000 for second, P163,000 for third, P60,000 for fourth, and P12,000 each for fifth to 10th placers.
Barcelona, Marinx and Tap Dance from the stable of Mayor Sandy Javier are picked to lead the local breeds for the 2,000-meter derby. Challenging them at the featured event are imported runners Invicible Girl, Guel Mi, Husso Porte, Bently and Security Model.
Three other divisional championship races will also be staged on the Don Juan Derby Day, the Golden Girls Stake-Don Antonio O. Floirendo Memorial Race in honor of the late Don Antonio Floirendo Sr., chairman emeritus of KDJM, the Don Juan Juvenile Colts and the Don Juan Juvenile Fillies with P500,000 guaranteed price sponsored by Dona Nenita Floirendo, KDJM and the Philippine Racing Commission.
