Don't take their dreams, Peter; VIEWPOINTS.

WHILE the X Factor may be an absurd spectacle in many ways (Peter Collins, December 5), it does allow those with possibly something to offer to step up and prove themselves.

Many great entertainers of long standing got their first break on a discovery show. Brother Collins may decry the state of our cultural life but it's not his business to dictate its terms or to discourage people from "following a dream". If they turn out to be rubbish in the long term they'll fall by the wayside sooner or later.

If Barry Island can make the most of Gavin & Stacey, Treharris was equally entitled to beat the drum for Lloyd, its own local boy.

Hyperbole is part of showbiz and part of the buzz of life. Collins shouldn't take it with such po-faced seriousness.

Being "ordinary" doesn't do it for everyone, you know.
