Doing the splits?

Evidence is mounting that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. stock will split soon.

The stock ended 1991 at a high of 58 7/8.

A local analyst tells us it is probably a matter of time before the stock splits again.

He points out that, in the proxy statement prior to last year's Wal-Mart annual meeting, stockholders were asked to approve an authorized number of shares outstanding to the amount that would more than cover a stock split.

One of the reasons for the increase was a possible future stock split.

Too, don't put great credence in the average share price when stock was split previously. That average was reported recently as about $53 a share.

Wal-Mart usually declares its split about four weeks before it happens, causing the stock to move up from 10 to 15 points.

We're told that if an announcement were made today, the stock might go as high as $70 per share before the actual split.
