Dog Racing: Reason the Northern Puppy Derby jolly; GREYHOUNDS.
SPONSORS Hills have installed the Charlie Lister-trained Farloe Reason as a warm 5-2 favourite for the Northern Puppy Derby which begins at Sunderland on Saturday, writes Peter Meldrum.
With only 30 greyhounds entered for the Category One stake, each of the first round qualifiers will consist of five runners only, with the first three from each qualifying for the semis on Saturday week, and that will have a huge bearing on ante-post betting for the competition.
Winner of his only race to date, a puppy open at Doncaster, Farloe Reason has moved well in recent trials at the Wearside track and looks a near-certainty to book a berth in the semis.
Hills' odds-compiler Ian Magor said: "Farloe Reason comes with a huge reputation and I wouldn't be surprised if he proves to be one of Lister's main Derby hopes for next year.
"At this stage he has to be considered a very worthy favourite, but there are some very promising puppies in the event and it would be no surprise to see one or two of them emerge as serious contenders."
