Does caffeine increase risk of spontaneous abortion? (Medical News From Around The World).

SWEDEN--A study was performed in Uppsala County to investigate whether caffeine habits induce spontaneous abortion among a population of women who had miscarried and a population of women who had not.

Nonsmoking women who used at least 500 milligrams of caffeine per day showed increased odds of miscarriage, whereas smokers who used the same amount of caffeine showed no increased risk. Overall, caffeine was a risk factor when the fetal karyotype (the full chromosome set of the nucleus of the cell) was normal but not when the karyotype was abnormal.

The results of this study do not show a definite cause and effect for spontaneous abortions, but it is recommended that pregnant women use caffeine in moderation.
