Doe announces 2016 NGL winners.

Twenty-five products have been recognized for excellence by the 2016 Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) competition. The competition was launched in 2008 by the Department of Energy to encourage technical innovation and excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED luminaires for commercial, industrial and institutional applications.

Ninety-three submissions of market-ready samples and complete documentation were evaluated by a panel of 21 judges that scored products based on color, illuminance, glare control, light distribution, serviceability, value, dimming control and appearance.

This year's competition introduced two new categories: connected lighting (indoor) and sports lighting (outdoor). Target areas for the 62 judged indoor products included high lumen-output capabilities and controllability. For the 31 judged outdoor products, target areas included pedestrian-scale, garage, roadway, parking lot and wall-pack luminaires, as well as integrated sensors and dimming control.

Of the winning products, announced at LIGHTFAIR in April, 20 were classified as "Recognized" and five were classified as "Outstanding."

Indoor

"Outstanding" indoor products include Focal Point's Nera linear pendant, Eaton's Portfolio dim-to-warm and Kenall Lighting's white-tunable MedMaster Balance. "Recognized" indoor products include decorative pendant luminaires by Visa Lighting, Selux Corporation and LED Linear GmbH; two linear pendant luminaires by Philips Ledalite; white-tunable luminaires by Selux Corporation, Acuity Brands Lighting Inc. and Acuity's Juno Lighting Group; METEOR LIGHTING's high-output downlight; Juno Lighting Group's recessed accent light; cove lights by LF Illumination and LumenWerx; and a wall-wash luminaire by QuarkStar and Everlight.

Outdoor

"Outstanding" outdoor products include Landscape Forms, Inc.'s FGP Path Light bollard and Cree's RSW Series LED Street Luminaire. "Recognized" outdoor products include bollards by First Light Technologies and Selux Corporation; pedestrian-scale post-top luminaires by Landscape Forms Inc. and Eaton; and parking garage luminaires by Kenall Lighting, RAB Lighting Inc. and Philips Gardco.

The two luminaires evaluated for the new sports lighting category--Eaton's Ephesus Lighting Stadium Pro and KMV's SUFA-A Sports Luminaire--were considered "Notable," but not recognized as winning products.
