Dods' supermare is Angel of the North; Mecca soars in Nunthorpe.

LOCAL heroine Mecca's Angel retained her Nunthorpe crown with a blistering display of speed at York.

The 9-2 shot was only allowed to take her chance by trainer Michael Dods after a wet morning on the Knavesmire but always travelled sweetly just behind the leaders under Paul Mulrennan.

The jockey pushed the button two out and he was rewarded with a blistering turn of foot from the mare who powered clear to beat Limato (15-8 Fav) in tremendous style by two lengths.

Dods said: Limato is a very good horse, but she put the race to bed a long way from home.

"She won't race next year - she'll be sold to stud - but I'll be keen to try her over six furlongs before she retires. There's the sprint at Ascot on Champions Day and there's also the Abbaye at Longchamp on Arc weekend. There's a possibility she could run in both.

"Words can't explain how I feel at the moment. I'm delighted for the whole team and it's also great for the north."

William Hill soon made Mecca's Angel 9-2 favourite from 7s for the British Champions Sprint at Ascot in October.

Meanwhile, Quest For More (9-2) did it the hard way in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup.

Roger Charlton's gelding made every yard of the running in the two-mile contest and still had a comfortable three lengths in hand over Pallasator (7-2) at the post.

Ladbroke quickly cut Quest For More to 10-1 from 20s for October's Long Distance Cup at Ascot.
