MUZAFFARABAD -- Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Sardar Masood Khan on Thursday urgedmedical practitioners to use emerging technologies for diagnostic and surgical purposes to provide quality healthcare.

He pointed out thatminimally invasive surgery procedures in the recent past had transformed the surgical field and medical facilitators in AJK should take advantage of this new development.

The president expressed these views ata presentation at Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahayan (SKZN) Hospital in Muzaffarabad.

The presentation was given by consultant spine and brain surgeon Dr Khawaja Shahid Sajjad Dar, and hospital's commandant Brig Hassan Iqbal, Deputy Commandant Col Zulfiqar and deputy medical superintendent Dr Noman Manzoor Butt and other officials were also present.

Dr Dar informed the president that SKZN Hospital was providing modern neurosurgery facilities to patients of brain and spine tumours, vascular malfunction (aneurysms), cerebrospinal fluid (rhinorrhoea), traumatic brain and spine injuries and sciatica (slipped discs) both through conventional and minimally invasive procedures.

He said he had operated on more than 100 patients since August 2017 with a 90pc success rate.

Some patients with high grade malignant tumours were advised radiotherapy and chemotherapy and were referred to advanced cancer centres, he said.

'It was for the first in the history of AJK that endoscopic surgeries were performed with least invasive techniques,' Dr Dar said, adding that endoscopic surgery did not require any incision and was considered to be the safest surgery because it was performed through small hole made in the skull or through nasal civilities and while performing the procedure the surgeon watched the whole procedure on a monitor.

According to him, endoscopic procedures were almost bloodless compared to open surgeries and less perilous as well.

Mr Khan congratulated the hospital management in general and Dr Dar in particular for their remarkable achievements in neurosurgical treatment in the state and asked them to publish brief description about the achievements for awareness and interest of the masses.
