Doctors Health Plan strengthens management team to lead the company's explosive growth.

DURHAM, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 27, 1997--Doctors Health Plan, Inc. announced several executive and senior management appointments as the health plan continues to experience tremendous enrollment growth in tandem with its expanding provider network throughout the Carolinas.

Deborah L. Redd was named Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of Doctors Health Plan. Ms. Redd has served as President, Managed Care division of Coastal Physician Group, Inc. (NYSE:DR) since January 1996, which includes Doctors Health Plan, Healthplan Southeast (an IPA-model commercial HMO in northern Florida), and Better Health Plan (a New York-based prepaid health plan for Medicaid recipients). She is also a member of Coastal's Board of Directors. Ms. Redd has more than 20 years of managed care experience, holding various executive positions with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Maryland, Inc. and with Chesapeake Physicians, P.A., a multi-specialty physician group associated with The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Kenneth J. Mayes, CPA was appointed President and Chief Financial Officer of Doctors Health Plan, replacing Gary Whitaker, M.D. who will continue to serve as the health plan's Medical Director. Mr. Mayes has more than 10 years of executive-level managed care experience. Prior to joining Doctors Health Plan, he served as Vice President, Finance for Keystone Health Plan East, a Philadelphia-based HMO with $1 billion in revenue, and also held the position of President of Vista Health Plan, Pennsylvania. Mr. Mayes is a member of the Financial Executives Institute, the HEDIS/NCQA Performance Measurement Committee, and the HEDIS Users Group-Finance Expert Panel. He holds a bachelor's degree from Baldwin-Wallace College and earned a master's degree from Kent State University.

Other recent appointments include:

- Jenine Woodward, RN was appointed Director, Medical Management and Quality Assurance. Ms. Woodward was most recently a Vice President, Health Services for Atlantic Health Plans in Charlotte, N.C., she has over 20 years of executive-level experience in medical management and quality assurance with health plans including Total Health Care in Baltimore, Md. and Health Plus in New York. Ms. Woodward earned a master's degree from the University of Baltimore's Johns Hopkins' School of Public Health.

- Jennette Cox was promoted to Director of Claims. Ms. Cox has been with Doctors Health Plan since its inception in 1994, and has more than ten years of claims management experience with various managed care organizations including Healthsource.

- Adrienne Carroll was appointed Manager of Health, Education and Wellness for Doctors Health Plan. Ms. Carroll had been a Wellness Coordinator for various health plans, institutions and government agencies including the University of California at Irvine, the U.S. Department of Education, and Qual Med Plans for Health of New Mexico, a subsidiary of Health Systems, Inc., one of the nation's largest HMOs. She earned a master's degree in public health from University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

- Graham Chalfant was named Regional Sales Manager for the health plan's Charlotte, North Carolina and contiguous market regions in North and South Carolina. Mr. Chalfant has more than seven years of sales management and benefits consulting experience, most recently with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of South Carolina.

Doctors Health Plan, Inc. is an independent physician association (IPA) model HMO currently providing health care services through a provider panel of more than 4,600 physicians and 52 hospitals. Doctors Health Plan is licensed to offer its health plan services in both North and South Carolina.
