Doctor, wife will not face "pangs of separation", says minister.

Patna Even as the medical community in Bihar protests on the streets seeking immediate recovery of the kidnapped doctor couple, the state health minister has stirred a controversy by stating it was good that the doctor was kidnapped with his wife as they will not face "pangs of separation" while in kidnappers' captivity. This is the first time in Bihar that a couple has been kidnapped.

Renowned physician Dr Pankaj Kumar Gupta and his businesswoman wife Shubhra Gupta were allegedly kidnapped by a highly professional gang of kidnappers on Friday noon while they were returning to their home in Gaya district after attending a marriage function in neighbouring Jharkhand state.

"The wife becomes panicky when only husband is abducted and vice versa. It is a matter of relief that both have been kidnapped," health minister Ramdhani Singh told the media on Monday night. Shortly after that, however, he extended an apology saying he did not intend to hurt anyone's sentiments.

The minister said the government had taken the kidnapping incident very seriously and was trying hard to ensure safe recovery of the kidnapped couple. According to him, chief minister Nitish Kumar is personally monitoring the case.

The kidnapped couple, in the meanwhile, remains traceless even four days after their kidnapping, leaving the entire doctor and business community restive. Angry doctors and businessmen on Tuesday took out a silent procession in the Gaya town braving sweltering summer to step up pressures on the police for immediate recovery of the victims.

"We all are apprehensive about the fate of the doctor couple and want their immediate recovery," a local doctor Farashrat Hssain who a part of the procession told a local news channel today.

What is further puzzling the police is also the disappearance of their Audi car upon which the victims were traveling. Investigators are now probing if the car was taken deep inside the jungle or kept inside any of the huge containers moving through the national highway.

The Bhartiya Janata Party today launched a massive assault on the government for the kidnapping of doctor couple and described it a breakdown of law and order situation in the state. "The Nitish Kumar government has left behind even the proverbial "Jungle Raj" during the previous RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) regime. During the previous regime, only the doctor would get kidnapped but now his wife too is being kidnapped," alleged senior BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain.
