Doc could have raped hundreds.

A PSYCHIATRIST jailed for eight years yesterday for raping and indecently assaulting six patients may have hundreds more victims.

Detectives believe the women who gave evidence against Dr Christopher Allison, 60, could be the tip of the iceberg.

Det Chief Insp Jim Antczak said: "This is a man who has been using and abusing the system for his own sick sexual purposes for as long as 30 years."

It was also revealed that the General Medical Council had been told about Allison's behaviour 14 years ago but failed to take any action. He resigned from one clinic after complaints from patients but moved to another.

Sentencing Allison, Judge Patrick Hooton told him that he had destroyed patients' trust: "They relied on you and you betrayed them for your own selfish, sexual purposes."

Allison was convicted of raping one patient twice and 10 indecent assaults on five others. He was cleared of 10 other offences.

He convinced patients the sex attacks were part of their treatment.

One woman, virgin Miss H, was assaulted after Allison told her it was to "help educate her".

Charles Gabb, prosecuting, told Winchester crown court: "He was exploiting women and his position when they were at their most damaged and weakest."

One victim told police Allison "had power over her like a God".

Married father of three Allison, of Risby, Suffolk, who practised in Canterbury, Kent, was suspended by the NHS in 1988 after complaints he abused two patients. Police were not informed and the GMC did nothing.

South East Thames Regional Health Authority, where he fended off accusations when he was head of the disciplinary committee, eventually forced him to resign but he set up a private clinic.

He was not struck off until 2000 after more complaints.
