Do it! Jobs for the week.

EASY TO increase the size of your dahlia (right) and chrysanthemum blooms remove the side buds that are forming around the larger terminal flower bud.

PLANT colchicums and autumn crocus in small groups in the front of shrub borders where the flowers can be seen in autumn.

GO on a hunt by torchlight for night feeders such as slugs, snails and vine weevils. During the day you'll find these pests hiding in cool, shady places.

EFFORT CHECK roses for signs of blackspot and spray with Rose Clear 3.

SCOUR flowerbeds for "free" seedlings. Cottage garden plants such as lupins, Lenten roses and granny's bonnets self-seed readily and their offspring can be transplanted to fill gaps and make new borders.

LOOK out for grey mould in flowerbeds, which will be worse in overcrowded bedding schemes. Remove mouldy flowers and spray infected plants with a fungicide.

TOUGH PUT nets over fruit bushes to prevent birds feasting on the ripening crops.

TRIM back long tendrils on wisteria by half or to five buds. Summer pruning encourages plenty of flower buds to form for next year.

CLIP conifer hedges to prevent them from becoming overgrown. Work from a scaffold and wear goggles and proper shoes.

PRUNE one-third of old growth on all mature summer-flowering shrubs such as philadelphus.
