Police divers are searching for an eight-year-old boy who fell into the River Wear in County Durham.

The eight-year-old is believed to have fallen into the river at around 7pm on Friday, while playing with friends.

Rescue teams scoured the area following the alarm.

A Durham Police spokesman said, "It is believed the boy, from Sunnybrow, was playing with his friends when he fell into the water.

"A specialist underwater search and rescue team is also assisting with the search."

Janice Larnach, the owner of the Brown Trout pub, near to where the boy is believed to have fallen in, said heavy rain in the area during the last week had left the River Wear flooded.

Mrs Larnach added she believed the boy's bicycle had been discovered on the river bank.
