Diver in storm ordeal.

A DIVER who was lost at sea for four hours is safe and sound - a f t e r swimming four miles to shore in ferocious weather.

A helicopter rescue operation was launched after John Mallard, 62, was swept away while diving near Kineff, Kincardineshire.

The Coast Guard had almost given up hope when John, a retired North Sea diver from Arboath, Angus, turned up, exhausted and in full diving gear, on the doorstep of a beachside house.

He said yesterday: "As soon as I stepped on to land, I was so grateful and relieved. I'm still taking it all in."

Bob Abercrombie, of Forth Coastguard said: "This is an amazing survival story."
