Diuretics Cause Magnesium Loss

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND: Many elderly people take diuretics (water pills) to treat hypertension, congestive heart failure, or fluid retention. A common side effect of some diuretics is loss of potassium, but loss of magnesium is less well recognized.

Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzyme systems, is a key factor in the energy-forming reactions of cells, and is important in maintaining normal heart rhythms. Diuretic preparations that prevent potassium loss also prevent magnesium loss. In a study of the effects of diuretics, the blood magnesium concentration of 320 elderly patients receiving diuretic therapy at the time of hospital admission was compared with that of 250 elderly patients who were not taking diuretics.

Patients receiving simple diuretic therapy excreted significant amounts of magnesium, but untreated patients, and those taking a potassium-sparing diuretic had minimal losses of magnesium.

Foods that are good sources of magnesium include whole-grain breads and cereals, beans, corn, nuts, bananas, cocoa, and dark green vegetables.
