Ditch our anthem - and monarchy.

HOW uplifting it has been to hear the stirring French National Anthem sung with such gusto by its citizens during the awful events of the past week. It obviously means a lot to the French people and is a source of great inspiration to them.

Contrast this with our own awful dirge of an anthem which makes no mention of our country, its people or our values but instead merely sings the praises of one person - an unelected monarch. Isn't it time we replaced it with something more relevant and more inspiring and, while we're at it, should we not get rid of that expensive, outdated and undemocratic institution that is the monarchy? The Windsors are on the throne simply through an accident of birth and if Andrew had happened to be the Queen's eldest son we would be faced with the prospect of King Andrew as our next Head of State.

Would anyone seriously welcome that? D WHITE, Whitley Bay
