District joy for Sports.

Bryncethin Sports won the Welsh District Rugby Union's Worthington Cup final for the first time in the competition's 33-year history, beating Clwb Rygbi Caerdydd 28-15 at Sardis Road, Pontypridd.

The match was played in an excellent spirit throughout, prompting WDRU chairman John Owen to describe it as one of the best finals he'd seen.

Bryncethin did not bring on one replacement, so well did their players perform.

Their coach Paul Watkin, a former Maesteg and Wales Youth centre, did not even give himself a run from the bench, while his forwards coach Nigel Evans, who had senior experience with Maesteg, Glamorgan Wanderers and Bonymaen, played the full 80 minutes at tight-head prop.

Clwb Rygbi began well with two good tries, one of which was converted, but centre Chris Williams scored a try for Bryncethin and full-back Lloyd Jenkins kicked two penalties to make the score 12-11 at the interval.

Bryncethin then took over and flanker Mark Thomas scored for Jenkins to convert and though Clwb Rygbi, the 2003 winners, added a penalty, a further Jenkins penalty and a conversion of a try by scrum- half Andrew Veazey settled it.

No.8 Paul Evans was selected as man of the match.
