Disgraced Maddy cop to open the case again; NEW PROBE TO FIND 'TRUTH'.

A DISGRACED former police chief is launching his own investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance.

Goncalo Amaral has announced plans to start an international private probe in a bid to solve the mystery.

He said: "The criminal investigation ended prematurely. This new probe may come to nothing, but it could lead to the truth." Amaral, removed as head of the inquiry in October 2007, said he will send his findings to judicial chiefs in Portugal with a request to re-open the case. His announcement comes just days before the second anniversary of Maddy's disappearance.

It follows an attempt by him to hijack Gerry and Kate McCann's TV interview with Oprah Winfrey, due to be broadcast on Monday. Amaral wrote the book The Truth Of The Lie claiming Maddy died in her parents Algarve holiday apartment the day she was last seen.

It has sold thousands of copies in Europe but has not been published in Britain because of fears the publishers would be be sued by the McCanns Amaral added: "This investigation is not aimed at finding evidence against Gerry and Kate. We want to make sure the truth comes out. Anyone can fight for justice, not just the courts and police.

"We've looked at what could have been done during the official inquiry and what could be done now." The McCanns, who at one time were official suspects in Portugal, vowed never to give up the search for their daughter.

Gerry recently wrote on his blog: "We remain focused on finding Madeleine and bringing her back safely. We cannot ever stop doing all we can to find her."
