Discover "a new way to market": at the 2011 National Hardware Show[R].


THE NATIONAL HARDWARE SHOW," (NHS) and the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) are coming together to bring retailers a "New Way to Market" at the show, in Las Vegas, May 10-12. The show will provide retailers with opportunities to find great new products, learn how to bring in new customers and increase outreach to existing customers through special events, product demonstrations, and NRHA TV, as well as engaging addresses by industry experts. The show will also include popular NRHA programs such as informative seminars and the Packaging and Merchandising Awards--as well as thousands of vendors showing off the latest products and trends.

Hundreds of Big Brands to Choose From Several major brands are returning to the NHS, along with 500 newcomers making their debut. Top brands will make their presence felt across seven major categories at the show including: Hardware & Tools; Homewares; Lawn & Garden/Outdoor Living; Paint & Accessories; Plumbing and Electrical; Storage and Organization; and Tailgating, Camping and Picnic, with core product categories also being showcased in the show's International Sourcing area.

"We are thrilled to have market leaders in several product categories joining us to unveil their latest and greatest product innovations to the industry's top buyers," says Rich Russo, event director of the NHS.

The show will feature category leaders like 3M (paint), The Coleman Company, Inc. (camping and outdoor equipment), Butler (housewares) and The Scotts Co. (lawn & garden).

Rich Neal, manager, consumer marketing for Oak Grove, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corp., who has been attending the show since joining Ace three years ago told the show, "This show has the widest breadth of product assortment and vendors under one roof. The NHS does a fantastic job creating a destination for all major brands and categories, while also being a great forum for new products, brands and classification. I always find innovative, new products at every show. If a hardware/home improvement vendor or retailer could attend just one show, this is the show."

The Tailgate Pavilion Doubles in Size

Last year, the NHS debuted the Tailgate Product Merchandising Pavilion and thanks to overwhelming success, it will be back again for the 2011 show with a few additions. This year the Tailgate Pavilion will feature camping and picnic products along with an assortment of grilling and other tailgating categories. Based on research, the NHS discovered that more and more home improvement, hardware and general merchandise retailers are focusing shelf space on camping and picnic products to drive incremental traffic, sales and per-customer transaction.

The Tailgate, Camping & Picnic Products Pavilion will be located in the Las Vegas Convention Center's Silver Parking Lot and feature more than 100 exhibitors--compared to 40 in 2010--in such key product categories as barbecue, licensed products, coolers, grills/grill accessories, rubs, outdoor games and tents/shelter, as well as a brand new camping and picnic area. Attendees can also look forward to a tailgate party complete with food samples, beverages and contests.


Get Holiday Shopping Done Early

More and more Americans went to their local hardware stores and home centers to pick up lights, decorations, holiday-themed figurines and even fully decorated Christmas trees this past holiday season. Keeping up with customer demand, the Hardware Show's seasonal area has been expanded to include hundreds of the industry's hottest and most innovative products.

"Holiday decor is thriving in the marketplace, and the number of hardware retailers carrying holiday decor is increasing every year," says Christina Barnes, general manager of Accents Unlimited, a seasonal products company. "The National Hardware Show provides a great opportunity for companies to meet with holiday buyers to review future holiday trends and add to their upcoming holiday selections."

The seasonal category has also become an important category for, where holiday storage for Christmas trees, wreaths, garland, lights, ornaments and decor is at its peak during the December and January months.

"We look to the National Hardware Show as a place to find our seasonal hardware and outdoor decorating needs," says Deborah Shearer,'s vice president of marketing and merchandising. "We look forward to the NHS as it continues to expand the vendors in the seasonal categories."

In addition to products related to the winter holidays, the seasonal category also includes Lawn & Garden products, as well as sleds, towables, snow shovels, ice melt and a variety of other items. Seasonal products can be found in specific areas at the show, making it convenient for buyers to see several companies in a shorter period of time.

"There are many merchants that attend the NHS and primarily focus on their areas of responsibility. It has to be a tremendous benefit to go to one central arena and view multiple vendors," says Ray Shelor, national sales manager--retail sales for DiversiTech Corp., whose products include a Christmas tree stand mat and Holiday SurfaceSaver. "This allows them to complete their core business and leaves time to walk the show for other new products or follow up with existing vendors. I can see many merchants and show new and past successful products on a minimum budget, and the merchants can maximize their travel allowance by having a basic one-stop-shop event."



Going Green Gets Easier

As Americans look for new ways to save energy, the NHS will continue to kick up its emphasis on energy efficient products, services and information. For the first time, exhibitors with energy efficient products will be given a special designation in the Show Directory, on the NHS website and with signage in their booths, making it easier for Show attendees to discover the latest and greatest in energy saving innovation.

"The Hardware Show has long been the premiere showcase for new and innovative products. In 2011, innovative will also mean energy efficient," says Sharon Gallagher, senior channel manager of retail at TCPI which produces CFL lighting products. "This year's show will be a must to see the advances in energy efficiency across all product categories, but especially in energy efficient lighting. Retailers and distributors need to prepare for the coming incandescent phase-out and the new, more efficient technologies that will be replacing it."

In addition to CFL lighting, the category of energy efficient products includes pipe insulation, weather stripping, programmable thermostats, motion sensor lights, dimmer switches, window and door insulator strips and more.

In addition to presenting awards for each of the Packaging and Merchandising categories, NRHA will present a "Best of Show" award for the top entry in both categories.
