Disabled soap star I'm feisty as hell.

Actress Melissa Johns used to be selfconscious about her disability but is relishing her role as a fiery one-armed lesbian in Corrie.

Melissa, 27, who is missing her right arm below the elbow, plays newcomer Imogen.

As a child she tried to hide her disability. She was taunted at school but refused to let it get her down.

Melissa said: "I wore a prosthetic arm and some boys threw stones at me. But we can all get bullied.

"I love that I now play a blonde, I have one arm, I'm feisty as hell and I am gay."

The actress, who has appeared in Silk and Casualty, made an instant impact in Corrie when Kate Connor, played by Faye Brookes, caught her eye.

She also runs a drama workshop, TRIPLEC, that she set up with fellow Corrie disabled actress Cherylee Houston, who plays Izzy.

Melissa, who has been with boyfriend Mat Swaine for four years, said: "I think Corrie is good at showing disabled people but TV needs to catch up. We are going in the right direction but not fast enough.

"I have had lots of parents contacting me saying their children have a disability and what a positive effect I have been, which is lovely."
