Dining out in Orlando.

Perhaps nowhere else in the country do eating and entertainment go hand-in-hand as in Orlando. Throughout the Orlando area, both in the city and out in the country, visitors will find a selection of theme restaurants and dinner theaters that offer not only delicious food, but pleasant entertainment as well. For the most part, dress is casual and restaurants are open seven days a week, but call ahead for reservations. Some restaurants are closed on Monday. Restaurant reservations can also be made at a courtesy desk located in the RIMS registration area.


One of the most delightful dining experiences in Orlando can be found at one of its most interesting tourist attractions. The World Showcase, located in Epcot Center, is home to a variety of ethnictheme restaurants that successfully serve up British, French, German, Italian, Chinese, American, Canadian, Japanese, Mexican, Moroccan and. Norwegian cuisines -- in both adult and child-sized portions. Many are modeled on internationally famous restaurants in their home countries. Highly rated for both quality of food and creativity of decor, these restaurants are consistently packed. King Henry VIII was the inspiration for this lusty theme restaurant that offers a five-course feast including brown bread, salad, fibs, and chocolate mousse. Henry looks on as you dine, knights duel, and magicians and court jesters entertain. Dinner shows at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. daily. 8984 International Drive, Orlando. This replica of a sidewheeler from a bygone era cruises the St. Johns River and winds through the riverfront wilderness as passengers lounge on three broad decks. A variety of luncheon and dinner-dance cruises are available. 433 N. Palmetto Avenue, Sanford. Credit cards accepted. (800) 423-7401.


Slightly less dramatic, but altogether charming, is the 50-year-old tradition of the Peabody duck march. Twice daily, four mallard hens and a drake march down a red carpet to the tune of John Philip Sousa's "King Cotton" march. Watch the parade, then dine at one of the Peabody's three fine restaurants: the B-Line Diner, a 1950s style eatery with sandwiches, mesquite-grilled burgers, Blue Plate Specials and a welcoming jukebox (open 24 hours a day); Capriccio, a Northern Italian eatery with an open kitchen and wood-burning pizza oven (dinner); and Dux, where American goutmet delights such as grilled quail and Florida lobster are served in an opulent setting and accompanied by a fine wine list (lunch and dinner). 9801 International Drive, Orlando. Decorated with items from the 1930s and 1940s and an extensive toy train collection, this lively restaurant features American cuisine such as Prime Ribs Weismuller, a 32-ounce cut that was voted the best prime rib in the United States by Willard Scott of NBC's Today Show. Other creative menu entrees include mixed grill, paella and grouper. Big Band music filters throughout the restaurant as you dine in such venues as the Tunnel of Love. Lunch and dinner. 1351 S. Originally opened in the 1930s, this award-winning, family-owned country inn and restaurant looks like a touch of Switzerland in the sun. Try broiled grapefruit, filet-mignon and Crepes Suzanne. A six-course meal is also available for the hearty eater. Astronaut James Irwin enjoyed the soup here so much that he had NASA freeze dry it so he could take it with him to the moon. This Italian eatery has been serving homemade pasta and fresh fish and meat dishes for over 40 years. Specialties on any given evening might include stuffed pasta with jumbo shrimp in a cream sauce, veal scaloppine with prosciutto and fontina cheese, eggplant with four cheeses or a delicious fish soup from the Adriatic region. For a no-frills steak dinner, this is the place. Diners can feast on all the traditional cuts of beef plus salad, potatoes and bread to round out the meal. You'll be served hot and cold hors d'oeuvres in an English drawing room -- complete with gargoyles, chandeliers and secret panels during the two-and-a-half hour event. Established in 1945, this nautical Orlando favorite serves up fresh seafood dishes, simply prepared. Jumbo fried shrimp and Florida lobster are acknowledged favorites of the many customers who return again and again to this popular spot. Despite the name, the restaurant serves up plenty of seafood, but no duck. The name originated from the early days of all-you-can eat specials -- when customers would duck in and waddle out. Once the former Eldridge-McBride House, this lovely restored Victorian mansion is now home to some of the area's finest Southern-style cooking. Accented by Martin's Pond, rolling lawns and a wide veranda, the plantation serves up just about anything fried -- including skillet chicken, bourbon steak and conch fritters. Surrounded by fountains, manicured lawns and lush flowers, this hilltop maison houses an assortment of cozy dining rooms, each with its own personality. The award-winning kitchen serves up creative continental cuisine such as breast of chicken with crayfish, olives and thyme; sauteed medallions of veal with basil butter; and snapper maison in an atmosphere of quiet elegance.
