Digital Publishing Firm OverDrive Opens European Office; Partners With Leading Scandinavian Service Bureau Autotext.

Business Editors

OverDrive Inc., a leading worldwide provider of electronic publishing technologies and e-commerce services, has established an office in Amsterdam to provide technical and customer support for its growing list of publishing and digital content customers throughout Europe.

OverDrive provides software and its MIDAS Technology suite of services for print publishers seeking to convert their book titles to new eBook formats, such as Microsoft Reader. MIDAS Technology enables secure hosting for Web sites that market eBook titles and other content featuring Microsoft's Digital Asset Server.

OverDrive serves major publishing and retail bookselling customers in the United States and Europe, where its customers include Vivendi Universal Publishing in Paris, in Milan and Planeta in Barcelona.

Claudia Weissman, OverDrive's director of international accounts, says the firm chose Amsterdam in large part for its accessibility. "We're already dealing with major publishing concerns in France, the U.K., Spain, Ireland and other key European markets," she says. "The Netherlands location puts us at the center of much of this activity."

In concert with the opening of its new office, OverDrive has named Sweden- and Denmark-based Autotext an authorized OverDrive Application Service Partner in Europe. Autotext has been a reseller of OverDrive's ReaderWorks software products for about a year.

OverDrive's MIDAS Technology is crucial to Autotext's numerous eBook initiatives, which involve some of the largest publishing houses in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Weissman says the new arrangement with Autotext enables the launch of eBookstores using OverDrive and Microsoft's digital rights management platforms.
