Digicel to be granted GSM licence for Guyana.

TELECOMWORLDWIRE-16 August 2006-Digicel to be granted GSM licence for Guyana(C)1994-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Digicel Group, a GSM network operator in the Caribbean, has revealed it is to be granted a licence to operate a GSM network in Guyana.

The operator said the issuance of the licence from the Government of Guyana will be subject to the public consultation process required under the Guyana Telecommunications Act 1990.

The President of Guyana, Mr Bharrat Jagdeo, said Guyana's telecomms industry has become increasingly important to the nation. He stated that Digicel's entry into Guyana is expected to bring benefits, with its customer-centric approach and new mobile telecomms services.

The licence will extend Digicel's reach to 21 markets in the Caribbean network, supporting its plan to establish a pan-Caribbean network and bridge the technology divide between nations.
