Digest: Super union backed.

The prospect of a new "super union" being formed came a step nearer yesterday when the idea was backed by leaders of the giant transport union.

The executive of the Transport and General Workers Union unanimously supported plans to merge with Amicus to form a two million-strong organisation in industries ranging from aviation to road transport.

The proposal will go before a special TGWU conference before the end of the year, and if approved in a ballot, the new union will be launched next May.

TGWU general secretary Tony Woodley said: "A bigger stronger union will translate into real gains for working people on terms and conditions and will make employers sit up and listen."
