Dietary fish and asthma.
The Question: Does the timing of adding fish to a baby's diet affect the risk of developing asthma later in life?
The Study: In this Dutch retrospective study, the age of introduction of fish to the diet was recorded. The children were then evaluated at three and four years of life for any symptoms of asthma. The age of adding fish to the diet was divided into three periods: zero to six months, six to twelve months, and over twelve months of age.
The Results: Children who were first exposed to fish between six and twelve months of age had the lowest rate of asthma when three-to-four years old. If fish was introduced earlier, or after 12 months, the rate of asthma was about 1.5 times greater.
Comment: If this relationship is supported by additional studies then we should ask what immune mechanism causes this relationship.
