Die-set builder aids appliance maker.

As George Steil settled into his new position as die-design supervisor three years ago at Wright Industries Inc, Nashville, TN, he knew of one important change needed in the way dies were built.

He saw workers making up to $16/hr who were spending up to eight hours with a mechanical saw creating cutouts in die-set plates. His company was losing billable time, with a value almost double the employees' wages, and productivity was minimal In a previous position, Steil had specified a Wisconsin-based die-set builder as the regular supplier when irregular or rectangular holes were needed. The reason: the company, Superior Die Set Corp, Oak Creek, Big 5-ft x 14-ft die set from Superior is the base for this Magic Chef die. The die set is shown in two halves, foreground and rear. On table at right is a sample product: a door liner. WI, charges $20 for an average hole in a die-set plate. That figure, Steil notes, is much less than the cost for a Wright Industries employee to handle the job. Holes of all sizes and shapes are made with flamecutting equipment at Superior, said to be the first dieset manufacturer to introduce this holemaking technique more than 60 years ago.

Three of the company's four machines are CNC and are tied to a Distributed Numerical Control (DNC) system installed in 1985. A CAD system does the nesting of numerous customer orders on the same steel plate, which leads to a fast, efficient, low-cost response. "It's the company's high level of computerization and its superior machining centers and other metalworking equipment," says Steil, "that attracts a company like ours. When we need some big plates ... we invariably go to Superior. There's seldom any milling or machining still to be done when a die set arrives from that company." While Wright makes dies of all sizes, occasionally requiring die sets measuring 20" x 30", its major business calls for units twice that size or larger. One of the biggest die sets ever ordered by Wright was produced by Superior. It's 60" x 168" and provides the framework for a die making heavy-gage door liners for an appliance manufacturer.
