Diana Krall Announces the Passing of Family Matriarch Adella Krall.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The family of Diana Krall have announced the passing of Diana's mother, Adella Krall, on Sunday, May 26, 2002 at Vancouver General Hospital.

Adella was a longtime elementary teacher/librarian in Nanaimo, where she and husband Jim raised their daughters Diana and Michelle. In 1996, at the age of 54, she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare form of bone marrow cancer. Thanks to a successful marrow transplant from her sister Irene McKechnie, and to the ongoing treatment she received through the VGH Bone Marrow Transplantation program, Adella enjoyed extended remissions during which she led a full and productive life and was able to enjoy Diana's growing international success.

A tight-knit family, the Kralls attended many of Diana's key appearances around the world, including a presidential concert in Washington, D.C. in 2000 and a widely lauded series of gala performances last year in Paris.

Over the past six years Adella also spearheaded an ambitious fundraising campaign in support of the Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplantation program. She hosted a series of four charity evenings, organised by her daughter Michelle and the VGH/UBC Hospital Foundation committee, featuring performances by Diana and raising close to $500,000 for the hospital's pioneering research, priority equipment and patient care needs.

Overseeing her treatments was VGH's Dr. John Shepherd, who became a close friend and fundraising helpmate to Adella and Jim. Saddened by her death, Dr. Shepherd described Adella as "selfless, joyful and loving -- one of the finest people it has ever been my privilege to know."

A private funeral will be held this week in Nanaimo. Details concerning a memorial service will be announced shortly.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplantation Program, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, 855 West 12th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. V5Z 1M9.
